Three of the four Region 2D quarterfinal games will be rematches of regular season games pitting district foes against each other.
In Region 1D, the quarterfinal playoffs will feature two rematches of regular season contests.
The regional quarterfinals kick off Friday night with three games scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
Mountain 7 District foes Union (8-2) and John Battle (5-5) will meet for the second week in a row.
The two teams squared off in the final week of the regular season last Friday, with visiting Union taking a 12-0 win over the Trojans.
On Friday night, the two will meet at Bullitt Park in Big Stone Gap.
In another regional quarterfinal game, surprising Wise Central (4-6) travels to top-seeded Ridgeview (9-1).
Ridgeview’s only loss this year came to Class 3 Abingdon.
Powered by the running game of Trenton Adkins and a solid defensive unit, Ridgeview rolled over most of its opponents, including a 54-0 win over Wise Central in early September.
However, a young Central squad has grown up since then. The Warriors came away with tough wins over Lee, Gate City and Grundy in the final three games of the season to earn a playoff spot.
In the other Friday night regional quarterfinal contest, Richlands will travel to Grayson County.
The game at Independence is the only contest that features two teams that have not played one another.
Another rematch of district opponents pits Virginia High at Graham in Bluefield on Saturday.
Graham won the regular season meeting of the two Southwest District foes 44-7.
Top-seeded Chilhowie (10-0), the favorite to make a return trip to Salem and the VHSL state championship, hosts Eastside (4-6) Friday at 7 p.m.
Eastside, which got into the playoff field with a victory over Castlewood last weekend, hopes to pull off a big upset.
The Spartans have the weapons to do so with quarterback Jordan Rasnick and running back Garrett Whited.
Rasnick has thrown for more than 2,000 yards this season and for more than 4,000 yards in his career.
Whited has rushed for more than 1,000 yards this season.
The two teams met on the gridiron last month with Chilhowie taking a convincing 46-7 victory.
In other Friday games, Thomas Walker (7-3) travels to Grundy (6-4), which features the all-star skills of running back Gabe Fiser.
Fiser has created a new record book at Grundy. The senior, who also owns three state wrestling championships, has rushed for more than 4,200 yards in his career, a school record.
He also owns school records for rushing yardage in a season and in a single game.
In another playoff game Friday night, Honaker travels to Patrick Henry.
The contest is a rematch of a regular season meeting that Patrick Henry won 46-15.
In the only Region 1D quarterfinal game being played Saturday, J.I. Burton (8-2) hosts Holston (6-4) at Lawson-Fitchko Stadium in Norton at 1:30 p.m.
Burton enters the game on an eight-game winning streak after losing its first two contests of the season.
