Adkins, Culbertson lead All-SW Virginia team

Underclassmen took the top honors on the 2018 Times News All-Southwest Virginia football team.

Ridgeview sophomore sensation Trenton Adkins’ stellar season earned him the title of Times News Offensive Player of the Year, and J.I. Burton junior Mikey Culbertson pounded his way to Times News Defensive Player of the Year honors.

J.I. Burton veteran coach Jim Adams was selected coach of the year.

BIG NUMBERS FOR ADKINS

Adkins, who continues to get looks from NCAA Division I schools, had a strong sophomore year to back up his coming-out party a year ago as a freshman.

Adkins rushed for 1,987 yards and 26 touchdowns on 217 carries this season. He also had 271 yards and five touchdowns receiving on just nine catches.

BURTON DOUBLES UP

J.I. Burton’s defense struggled at times during the season, but Culbertson was a constant for the Raiders.

The junior recorded 137 tackles and had 51 tackle assists. He also recorded five sacks and had two interceptions.

Adams was named coach of year after guiding the Raiders to the Cumberland District championship and into the Region 1D semifinals.

Under Adams, the Raiders — who had a roster hovering around the 25-player mark throughout the year — closed out the regular season with eight consecutive victories to finish 8-2.

The Raiders then went 1-1 in the postseason to complete the year with a 9-3 mark.
