The woman told HCSO Deputy Anthony Crosby she got home from work around 5:56 p.m. and was alone when she heard the sounds of an intruder in the basement.
The woman said she stomped on the floor to announce her presence, after which she observed a man walking from her house carrying a power washer and an orange bucket.
When Crosby arrived on the scene, Deputy Kevin Johnson was already there due to a similar incident in the neighborhood in which the suspect was captured on surveillance video.
The woman identified the suspect, Douglas Paul Smith, 45, 132 Wallen Town Road, Church Hill, as the man she had seen walking away from her home with the stolen items.
Deputies confronted Smith at his residence, where he allegedly admitted to removing a pane from the woman’s basement window and taking a power washer valued at $150, a bucket containing several tools valued at $150 and several items of food from a freezer.
All of the items were recovered by deputies and identified by the owners.
Smith was charged with aggravated burglary, theft under $500 and vandalism.
